Born in a refugee camp in Germany, I now live in a small glass apartment one hundred and fifty feet above the ground. It is so crowded with books, robots, toys and folk art that sometimes I have to go outside just to change my mind. I work at a small desk overlooking the city of Vancouver. All my pencils, paints, brushes and paper are kept in the kitchen cupboards. Recently I have started using the computer and photography to illustrate my books. For inspiration I travel to faraway places like Tokyo, Mexico City, New York and Marrakesh. Sometimes I just take a walk around the block.
To be a writer and visual artist is to be like a shaman in a cave. You possess the ability to go to magic places within yourself, to become a coyote, a mouse, a tree, the wind, a river, or even the luminous moon, whatever you wish, and then to come back with a story to tell. Both the writer and the artist in me uses a pencil, a computer, or a camera to tell the story of that world of awe. And when a reader reads the story and sees the pictures, they are transported into that world of wonder. |
